I often write in connection with my painting. Not a journal, although I do keep one of those so that I don’t lose track of odd thoughts and technical discoveries. Not artist statements, although I do write those when required. I write as a way of joining (stitching together) the thoughts and associations that come out of the paintings. The metaphor is apt, as I work in a thread-like way and the paintings themselves are metaphors of connection, between different times, different places, different cultures.
Often, usually, I don’t really know what I’m painting until I’m well into it. I sometimes think I know before I start, but the paintings seem somehow to develop their own requirements and I come to understand them gradually.
As in the myths, I follow a thread through an unlit labyrinth.
I paint, therefore I exhibit.
I write, therefore I blog.
